Some First Impressions On My Return

June 24, 2009

Being back in America has it’s ups and downs and interesting twists. The ups are seeing friends and family. The downs are missing friends and the city life. The twists are things i didn’t really know about myself until i came back. In this post, i’ll focus on the twists.

The twists are things i didn’t expect to happen, but are happening regardless. They aren’t necessarily bad and they aren’t good either. It’s just different. Here are a few twists i’ve become aware of in my few short days on American soil.

  • Celsius vs. Fahrenheit - I didn’t know that secretly while i was in China my brain was switching from thinking in fahrenheit to thinking in celsius. I first realized this at my hotel in Toronto. There was a digital thermostat on the wall and i couldn’t figure out what temperature would be the best. I ended up waking up in the middle night sweating because apparently 80 degrees is too hot.
  • I also have a tendency to think in meters and kilometers instead of feet and miles. This has not posed too big of a problem yet, it’s just funny.
  • I stare at Chinese people in America like Chinese people stare at me when i’m in China.
  • No jet lag. That’s right. Me and jet lag didn’t even have to get into a fight this year. It seemed as though i jumped right on a normal sleep schedule as soon as i got here. I would like to give a special thanks to my friend, Ambien, for his assistance in that.

This short season of being in America is very interesting. I’m looking forward to more observations.
