If you’re into language learning, especially Chinese, then this blog post is for you. A good friend sent me a link to Lingt.com yesterday and told me i might enjoy it. I was out running errands when the email came through so i wrote back to say that i’d look into it when i got home. I’ve seen a lot of these Chinese language helper websites and i’m always let down so i had low expectations. I got home, clicked on the link in the email, and boom… i was instantly sucked into an addicting online language learning tool. I don’t know how to describe it’s addicting attributes, but i just know that it’s addicting. i did a couple of the very basic lessons and now i’m getting excited about future lessons to learn. One cool thing about Lingt.com is that it keeps track of your learning progress and builds daily lessons for you to go through. So when you finish a word list for the day then you’re done and it tells you there’s nothing more to study for that day. That is such a feeling of freedom and accomplishment to know that i don’t have to just keep going and going, but that there’s actually a stopping point for the day. Anyone who’s ever studied a language knows that the learning is never-ending. So for Lingt.com to give me a stopping point is brilliant.
Here’s a brief list of pros and cons (keeping in mind that i only used it last night and as soon as i finish typing this i’m going back for today’s lesson)::
PROs -
- A stopping point each day so you have to come back the next day for new lessons.
- Beautiful “web 2.0″ design
- No fuss sign up.
- Intuitive lessons. No boring instructions to read or “how to” videos to watch.
CONs -
- Addicting. (be careful). This isn’t a real con i guess… it’s brilliant.
- mispronunciation of some words.
- Speaks a little too slowly. If someone has never been around a native Chinese speaker then they might think those words are actually spoken that slowly.

hey buddy, how have you been? I’ve been really busy for my finals lately. Remember last year we went to the new year music concert together in BIT? I am going to this year’s convert on saturday! Can’t believe it’s been a year, feels like yesterday to me.
When are you coming back to Beijing?

this site is good for reviewing vocab, and forces you to remember tones but i dont think its great for learning chinese without much previous experience. i DO like that they have lists for major texts so i can review my vocab from one of my books from min da.

MB:: Totally agree that it’s best for those with previous experience. I like how it is forcing me to remember tones because that is something i usually ignore and probably why my Chinese sucks. Thanks for checking it out and coming back with your thoughts about it.
