The thousands of Chinese soup variations available proved inadequate for a couple in Sichuan when their daughter’s psychiatric problems became too much to bear. It’s reported that the mother, Lin Zongxiu, was told that soup made with a man’s head could help cure her 25 year old girl’s craziness. So obviously there was only one solution: ask for someone to knock out a drunk 76-year old sucker and behead him. The couple then gave their daughter soup made from the man’s head, and duck.
A court sentenced the murderer to death with a two-year reprieve two days ago. And Lin? Credited for her exciting culinary explorations, a suspended one-year jail sentence appeared to be in order.

The other day i was asked, “What’s the craziest thing you’ve eaten in China?”
I think a turtle and a chicken head are maybe the top 2 craziest things. Maybe after that is chicken toes and i’m sure duck neck is somewhere on the list. But, “man head soup” is taking it a step too far. I have so many deeper thoughts on why this is even a problem, but i think i should reserve them for right now.

That is so horrible my first reaction is disbelief- surely not. But if it is true, China is not alone. We have our own version right here in the USA. What about the pro football player that drove his car under the influence and killed a man walking home from work who couldn’t afford a car. His sentence was 30 whole days (count them) and of course the cure for everything- Money. Oh, and don’t forget the very sincere apology. As a society we have reduced the value of life to….hmmm no value at all.
