Mess and Clutter

February 28, 2010

I’ve always felt bad for my lack of organizational skills. It’s an odd catch-22 for me because i can’t focus and get any work done until my desk is clean and orderly, but within a matter of minutes it’ll be a complete disaster again. Stacks of books and papers and cords all litter my desk and drive me crazy. Clearing off my desk is like clearing my mind and getting ready to reload it with a whole new mess of thoughts and ideas. As my head fills back up so does my desk. It’s an odd cycle and i’ve always battled with this.

Until yesterday.

Yesterday i read some words from my dear friend, Anne Lamott (we’re not really friends, but you know how some authors make you feel like you’re best friends? That’s how Annie is… yes, i call her Annie now).

Here’s a little of what Annie had to say to me yesterday over a cold cup of coffee:

“Clutter and mess show us that life is being lived.”

“Tidiness suggests that something is as good as its going to get.”

“We need to make messes in order to find out who we are and why we are here.”

  1. love it. i’m laughing to myself right now. why? because i’ve been so annoyed with how cluttered and messy i’ve become recently, not to mention confused because it’s so out of my character, but now i see it could be a good thing. simple as that.

  2. It’s hereditary. :) Your Dad & I are both like that and so is Jennifer. I found a quote when ya’ll were very young and it holds true today.
“A creative mess is better than idle tidiness.” Mom

  3. Anne Lamott is my dear friend, too (and maybe my favorite author)! I love her messy transparency.
