We’ve Been Waiting

December 25, 2009

As i sat in a church service tonight this image unfolded in my head:

Rebellious people against a loving God.
A rescue plan developing.
Thousands of years of hard work and sacrifices.
War. Strife.
THOUSANDS of years.
Law.
Offerings to make peace with God.
Promises spoken.
Promises written.
Rescue is coming.
Hope building.
Silence.
Stories are told across the generations.
Clutching to ancient promises.
Losing hope.
Is it real?
Silence.
Are the promises broken?
Waiting.

On a dark night in a dark field a few dirty and poor men are trying to stay awake through the night so they don’t lose their sheep. And bursting forth through the night an angel peels back the blackness of the night and the radiance of heaven comes screaming through to earth. The moment is here. The rescue plan is ready to be revealed. The shepherds are trembling in fear. The messenger from God is ecstatic with joy. And through the excitement he lays out the plan: “A Savior has just been born!” At that moment he is joined by a sea of angels who can no longer hold back their joy and they exclaim, “Glory to God! Peace is here!”

It’s here.
Rescue.
Hope.
Peace.
Promises fulfilled.
Silence broken.
Joy restored.
It’s everything we’ve been waiting for.

Merry Christmas.

  1. You’ve told the story so well in just a few words. It was very important to tell the story through those generations of silence, lest they miss the Glory of God and a Savior revealed in a tiny baby.

  2. Wow! Even though I read it a few months later it still give me goosebumps! :-)
